Commissioned Addictions Counselor, The Addiction Connection

This is about God’s work of redemption... in me, in you and in those who feel trapped in addiction.

The heartaches of life led me to life-altering moments and had it not been for my faith in God and the care of my church family, I don’t know where I would be. My family was broken and I was near hopeless. Addiction destroys more than just the addict. It can destroy family members too.

Devastating circumstances continued and ended in the failure of my marriage and then the overdose death of my husband. My world seemed to be spinning out of control. The following five years were the darkest of my life. Being anchored in scripture, having the love of my church and the grace of God , I had hope. I'm not going to lie, I wasn't sure I would survive the onslaught of trials and loss after devastating loss. But God is faithful and he sustained me, met me in my need and revealed even more of his goodness.

My heart is to help struggling addicts meet Jesus and teach practical application of scripture to both inform right thinking and teach what it means to walk in the light and follow Christ.

I was raised in a Christian home, attended church, Sunday school, Bible studies, and sang in the choir. Yet, I didn’t know Jesus. I would have said that I was happy, until some very hard things happened in my life. Death of a child, a bad divorce and excessive alcohol drove me down a path of pain and sorrow. BUT GOD, in His perfect love and perfect timing called me out of the darkness and brought me into his marvelous light.

The Lord blessed me with a husband that loves the Lord and whose desire is to follow him and love others. We knew first-hand the transforming power of Jesus and our desire was to serve others struggling with addiction. That’s when we attended our first Hope For Addiction meeting.  After that very first meeting we were so blown away by the honesty and grace offered there, we returned and never left. We are so thankful for the opportunity that we now have to share the wonderful gospel of Jesus on a weekly basis.

I have watched God work out details in my life and I stand in awe of His mighty hand that has enabled me to be a part of this amazing team.  I can truly say that my journey has been worth it as I surrender to the Lord daily and walk alongside those that are hurting and broken. I cannot fully express my gratitude to the God who has called me, restored me, and given me this beautiful ministry. There is HOPE, and his name is Jesus.

In March 2021, God brought me to the end of myself. I found myself in another state with nowhere to go, no hope and in utter despair. But by God's grace and mercy He provided a way out.

He pulled me from the muck and the mire and started me on a path that I could have never imagined.

I started attending Recovering Hope meetings which led me to move into Freedom House where I was able to see God is the only way to lasting change. After completing the program, I became live in staff at Liberty House when it opened in April 2023. God has used all parts of this amazing ministry to transform my life.

It is amazing to now have the privilege to walk alongside others as God changes their lives and to serve with those who served me. I am so grateful for this ministry and to my Lord and Savior for the work being done to change lives.

My life verse...

"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."  - Romans 5:8

I was raised in a Christian home, but from a young age I was aware that I was intrinsically sinful, wanting my own desires more than God's. I remember praying that God would put a desire in my heart to want to "be good", but I didn't understand that following Christ was more than just being good. As I got older I felt there was no hope for me to be loved by God, that my sinful heart could not be changed, and that I was always trying to fit a mold I never could. I longed for what I thought was freedom.

At 18 I left home, severing ties with anyone who loved me, and began living a very selfish, destructive life. A few years later, my daughter was born with a severe birth defect which required many surgeries, prolonged hospitalization, and nearly took her life.  That was the first time I thought about my choices affecting someone else, the first small step toward seeing my need for God. When my daughter was two, I started taking her to church. I began to understand the Gospel, and God's mercy, grace and love. It took awhile to believe that God's forgiveness wasn't just for other people, but incredibly, it was available to a person like me. After years of chasing what I thought was freedom, but was actually self-destruction, I humbled myself to God and surrendered my life and my will to him.  In doing so I came to know true freedom. Freedom from my sin and selfishness, freedom to live a life pleasing to God, through the power of his Holy Spirit.

I have experienced God's extravagant grace in every part of my life and there is nothing I want more than to share what I have been given with others. I can't believe I get to serve in this incredible ministry. I love the women I serve alongside, and the women we get to serve. It is the greatest blessing to see up-close and personal how God is changing and saving lives, and I pray that I can be as much of a blessing to the ladies we serve as they have been to me.

I am continually in awe of God’s amazing grace! Church has always been a significant part of my life—I grew up immersed in Sunday school, served as a youth helper, became a teacher, and eventually led the children’s ministry. However, it wasn’t until college that I truly understood what it means to have a deep love for and dependence on the Lord.

Looking back, I can see how God has carried me through significant trials, demonstrating His faithfulness every step of the way. My husband and I have grown in our reliance on the Lord through our journey as foster parents, an experience that has deepened my understanding of my need for Christ like never before.

I have been blessed to witness the growth of Hope for Addiction, and I am thrilled to be part of this ministry. It is a privilege to share the love and grace of Jesus, and I am in awe of how He uses this organization to bring His light into the darkness of this world.

Romans 6:9-11 reminds us: “We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” What a powerful hope we have in Jesus!
